Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Q&A

What is peripheral nerve stimulation?

Peripheral nerve stimulation is a device used to control chronic pain. It’s a safe and effective tool that may help decrease your need for prescription medication for pain control.

How does peripheral nerve stimulation work?

Peripheral nerve stimulation works by sending a weak electrical pulse to your peripheral nerve. The stimulation of the non-painful sensory nerve causes your brain to “turn off” the pain signal, thereby significantly decreasing your painful sensations. Many patients report feeling a tingling sensation when the nerve is being stimulated.

Am I a good candidate for peripheral nerve stimulation?

Dr. Shah determines if you’re a good candidate for peripheral nerve stimulation during a consultation. You may want to consider contacting SamWell Institute for Pain Management if you’re suffering from chronic pain due to:

  • Complex regional pain syndrome
  • Lower back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Diabetic peripheral neuropathy
  • Postamputation pain
  • Occipital neuralgia
  • Painful nerve injuries

Though peripheral nerve stimulation has been proven to be effective for many common causes of chronic pain, to be considered a good candidate you must first try conservative treatments, such as medication and physical therapy. If conservative measures fail to provide significant pain relief, then Dr. Shah may suggest peripheral nerve stimulation as a pain management option.

What is the peripheral nerve stimulation process?

Placement of the peripheral nerve stimulation device is a two-step process. Before the device is permanently placed under your skin, Dr. Shah conducts a trial run. During the trial, the leads are attached to your peripheral nerves under your skin, but the device is worn on your waist.

Your trial may last about a week. Dr. Shah requests that you closely monitor your pain during the trial to see if you would benefit from the permanent placement of the peripheral nerve stimulation device. If the trial is successful, then Dr. Shah completes the process and permanently implants the device and leads under your skin.

After placement of your device, Dr. Shah continues to monitor your pain and adjusts your medications accordingly. Many people experience long-term pain relief after the placement of their peripheral nerve stimulator.
