Spinal Cord Stimulation Q&A

What is spinal cord stimulation?

Spinal cord stimulation is a pain management tool that uses a low-voltage electric current along your spinal cord to modify and block pain signals, alleviating your discomfort. Spinal cord stimulation is an FDA-approved treatment for those suffering from chronic pain in their legs, back, or arms.

Am I a good candidate for spinal cord stimulation?

Dr. Shah determines if you’re a good candidate for spinal cord stimulation during your consultation. You may be considered a good candidate if:

  • You’ve tried and failed to get relief from your pain with conservative methods
  • Your pain isn’t caused by a malignancy
  • You’re not a good candidate for surgery
  • You don’t have any medical contraindications (such as a pacemaker)
  • You have no major psychiatric disorders
  • You’re willing to decrease the use of pain medication

If Dr. Shah determines that you would benefit from spinal cord stimulation to help get relief from your pain, he first conducts a trial period before he implants the device.

During the trial period, the leads that carry the electric current are attached to your spinal cord while you wear the device on your clothing. If you experience pain relief during the trial, then you may proceed with the implantation.

What can I expect during implantation of the device?

Implantation of your spinal cord stimulator is conducted under anesthesia to reduce your discomfort.

First, the leads are placed on your spinal canal, with the exact location depending on the source of your pain, and then they’re tunneled under your skin to your buttocks or abdomen, depending on where your device will be placed.

Then, incisions are made for implantation of the device, the leads are attached, and your incisions are closed.

After your surgery, which takes 60-90 minutes, you may spend time in the recovery area for monitoring and then you’re sent home with specific instructions on activity and pain management from Dr. Shah.

What happens after the placement of my spinal cord stimulator?

While results vary, most people experience a significant reduction in pain after placement of their spinal cord stimulator. Dr. Shah adjusts your prescription medication as your pain levels improve.
